In the 1980s and the early 1990s, the American actor Jim Varney (1949-2000) played the slapstick role of Ernest P. Worrel in a series of movies:

• Ernest Goes to Jail (1990) (#1 Box Office movie its opening week end with $17 million in ticket sales)
• Ernest Scared Stupid (1991)
• Ernest Rides Again (1993)

• Slam Dunk Ernest (1995)
• Ernest Goes to Africa (1997)
• Ernest in the Army(1998)
• Ernest the Pirate (2000) (Was near finishing of filming when Jim Varney died of lung cancer. The film was cancelled.)

Luckily I saw the first four movies, but the others have never been broadcast, probably because they were made for straight-to-video market. When I had time, I used to watch these movies quite a lot, especially Ernest Scared Stupid (French: Ernest à la chasse aux monstres; Ernest was dubbed by French comedian Jacques Balutin — the guy who, incidentally, was the French voice of Starsky and Cubitus). Here are the very kitschy opening credits:



I love the music, but also the silly, ridiculous "horror" movies of the 50s! (OK, Nosferatu was released in 1922.) In this film, Ernest accidentally unleashes an army of trolls in a small town. The trolls are led by Trantor, whose eyes still make me think of that of G.W. Bush…

Christmas Week: "Home Alone"

Here's another Christmas film I really love: Home Alone, starring Macaulay Culkin, Joe Pesci and Daniel Stern. (They curiously kind of disappeared from the screens after that…)

Ok, it was just a spoof. But this is frankly one of the best parodies to be seen on YouTube, along with that freaky, scary Mary Poppins re-cut trailer and Brokeback to the Future.

Admit it'd have been great to have Kevin as an evil creature coming from hell to annoy those poor Harry and Marvin in their idyllic existence, just after moving in a new cosy neighbourhood…

Star Wars Episode IV: A New Pope

Remember that I've already told you about the awkward resemblance between Pope Benedict XVI (aka Ratzinger, aka Panzerkardinal) and the evil Emperor Palpatine from the Star Wars saga, one of the most demonic vilains in the movie history?

Well, the other time I showed you convincing pictures, and now it's time for you to show actual evidence that Darth Ratzi is as evil as Palpatine, not only because of his grim face…



… but also because of his stands on a great many things (just to quote a couple of words from Return of the Jedi:



This one is called "Star Wars Episode IV: A New Pope", a pun on "Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope".



Striking, isn't it? This video was called "Dark Pope of the Sith", a pun on "Dark Lord of the Sith".

And to finish with, some genius had the idea of buying a little sculpture of the pope (which would be, otherwise, really dumb) and dress it with a dark cloak so that… he ended up with something like this:



Even more stricking, wasn't it?

If you don't know what to buy me for my birthday, I'd be delighted to get such a sculpture. It'd make a perfect addition to my collection (just to quote a few words from General Grievous).

Freddy vs. Jason: the Ultimate Matchup

A couple of years ago, I watched that slasher film named Freddy vs. Jason, consisting of 85 boring minutes before you can finally watch the two evil characters (Freddy Krueger from A Nightmare on Elm Street and Jason Voorhees from the Friday the 13th series) fight with each other in a kind of final epic struggle to death. A Lawn Mower Can Save Your Life!!!

Remember what I wrote in my blog entry of 7 October? Well, for the first time I have to quote myself:

I keep the best scene for the article I'll post on 31 October: it'll suit perfectly to the theme of the day… See you then!

Here we are. 31 October. I'm writing this at 6.42 pm. It's already dark. I'm alone in the corridor where my student room lies. It's the perfect time to watch the best scene of Braindead: the Lawnmower Scene. If you don't like horror movies and loathe the sight of blood (even fake), then you'd beter not watch this. Nevertheless, if you do want to have a good laugh, please watch it. It's definitely not the kind of movies that "make you shit bricks" (just to quote again thenostalgiacritic – cf. yesterday's post), but instead it's a tremendous movie.



And I can't resist to the temptation of showing you the fight opposing Father McGruder to several zombies:

It's a Cat…astrophy!

I imagine there is a contest to judge which cat is the ugliest in the world. (After all, there's such contest for dogs…) In my opinion, the cat on the picture on the left would be given the first prize! THAT is an ugly cat. My grandmother's cat, Bouboule, is a wicked piece of meat, but this cat being washed is like the Holy Grail of ugly cats…

PS. I haven't got a cat. (Encore heureux !)
