Scared Stupid

In the 1980s and the early 1990s, the American actor Jim Varney (1949-2000) played the slapstick role of Ernest P. Worrel in a series of movies:

• Ernest Goes to Camp (1987)
• Ernest Saves Christmas (1988)
• Ernest Goes to Jail (1990) (#1 Box Office movie its opening week end with $17 million in ticket sales)
• Ernest Scared Stupid (1991)
• Ernest Rides Again (1993)
• Ernest Goes to School (1994)
• Slam Dunk Ernest (1995)
• Ernest Goes to Africa (1997)
• Ernest in the Army(1998)
• Ernest the Pirate (2000) (Was near finishing of filming when Jim Varney died of lung cancer. The film was cancelled.)

Luckily I saw the first four movies, but the others have never been broadcast, probably because they were made for straight-to-video market. When I had time, I used to watch these movies quite a lot, especially Ernest Scared Stupid (French: Ernest à la chasse aux monstres; Ernest was dubbed by French comedian Jacques Balutin — the guy who, incidentally, was the French voice of Starsky and Cubitus). Here are the very kitschy opening credits:



I love the music, but also the silly, ridiculous "horror" movies of the 50s! (OK, Nosferatu was released in 1922.) In this film, Ernest accidentally unleashes an army of trolls in a small town. The trolls are led by Trantor, whose eyes still make me think of that of G.W. Bush…

Tomorrow I'm gonna go and see "The Simpsons Movie" at the cinema. So I decided to show you this sketch, which was part of a "Horror Show" (the episode that's broadcast on Halloween).



Silly, wasn't it? I like it because of the monster. And other puns like: "Head Zepplin!"

Bouboule, Evil Cat

Meet another monster in my family: Bouboule, my grand-mother's cat. He is evil. I mean it: he is evil. Look in his eyes, and you'll see that he would like to eat your face. Fortunately, this cat is not one of the most vivace in the world: he spends the whole day (and sometimes week, or month) lazying in a box. He only moves a little to get his food, that my grand-mother bought for him. He has nothing of a hunter.
Roughly one month ago, my grand-mother didn't see him in the house before she locked it. For once, he had to be outside. The days passed, and one week later, she thought he had been smashed by a car, and now rotting on a road, eaten by the flies. But no! This cat is evil! He came back! An aura of evil, I say. Normally, we say that a cat's got 9 lifes, but this one not only lived these 9 lifes, but also another 10, I think… My mother says that he was part of the cast of The Pet Semetary (sic), a film from a horror book by Stephen King, in which two childs bury a cat in an ancient Indian Cemetery, and then the cat comes back—with a vengence… Wicked.
