How to fool telemarketers

I'm pretty sure you've already been called by a telemarketer. My favourite way of answering the guy/girl is presented by the well-known comedian Jerry Seinfeld:

"I can't talk right now, why don't you give me your home number and I'll call you later?"
"Erm… Well, I'm sorry, we're not allowed to do that…"
"Oh, I guess you don't want people calling you at home."
"No."
"Well now you know how I feel."

Brilliant lines. Seinfeld came up with something else that's quite worth it, too:



Here's another way to piss off a telemarketer: just answer with one single word.

Jerry Seinfeld is a genius!

The other day, while wandering about on YouTube, I came across this commercial featuring one of my favourite comedians ever: Jerry Seinfeld.



Jerry Seinfeld cleverly made two references to a film he's playing in, namely Bee Movie. What was that? I had to check it out, and I found the trailers (see below). Seinfeld voices the bee character of Barry B(ee). Benson. The film also stars Renée Zellweger, Matthew Broderick and John Goodman (whom we hadn't seen in a while, had we?), among many others.

Erick Avari

Whenever the Afghan president, Hamid Karzai, appears with his old friend George W. Bush (you know, that crazy US president), I can't help but think of his lookalike, the actor Erick Avari. As you can see by comparing those two pictures, these men are quite resemblant to one another. Silly, isn't it?

Note that Mr Karzai was educated in America, before he graduated and became a member of several companies, among which several have interests in products for an army (namely the US Army)—and war in Afghanistan after the 9/11 attacks were a blessing for such companies, of course.

Note also that you can see Mr. Avari playing non-leading roles in many films, such as Daredevil with Ben Afleck (Avari was Electra's father), but also in series: he played a taxi driver in an early episode of Seinfeld.

Seinfeld: The Contest

Last week, I showed you a fragment from The Muppet Show, in which we could see what Seinfeld and his friends were talking about when they were young. I told you there was a reference to the episode The Contest, so I looked it up on YouTube and found the mythic scene, where you can understand the whole story. If you look a bit further on the website, I think you can watch the whole episode in several bits. Enjoy.



Oh, and as long as we're with Seinfeld, here is the fragment which is an Easter Egg (i.d. a reference) to JFK, with Kevin Costner. It's basically a spoof, and what's extraordinary about it is that the guy who plays Newman (Wayne Knight) was also playing in JFK, as an assissant to Garrison, the attorney.

The Baby Muppets + Seinfeld = The Seinfeld Babies

Again, I found something really silly on YouTube. I saw this Muppet Show scene when I was nine or so… At the time, I only knew Seinfeld from my parents, who were watching it every Saturday. Years passed by and I watched the nine series of Seinfeld as they broadcast them three years ago. And now, thanks to YouTube and the saint who posted this video, we can watch it as many times as we want!!

--> It refers to the 3rd-series episode The Contest in which Jerry, George, Elaine and Kramer are entering a contest in which they have not to… satisfy themselves… alone… Know what I mean. They didn't say the word in the episode, but this implicitness was so explicit that it was one of the funniest episodes ever — along with the Soup Nazi. In the real Seinfeld show, Kramer was the first to lose, shouting "I'm out!"

The Soup Nazi!!!

Seinfeld is definitely my favourite series. I discovered it three years ago, when they broadcasted the episodes from the very beginning, up to the ninth season…

The best episode ever is this one, with the Soup Nazi. I found it on YouTube, and I want to share it with those among you who haven't seen it yet. Unfortunately, the size of it is smaller, but just extend the frame.



A morphological note: Mr Vandelanotte, one of our professors at Namur University, told us that other phrases including "nazi" occur, as "brand nazi", which is said of someone who has to buy clothes from Nike or Adidas, etc.

And the Oscar® Goes to…

Last night took place in the Kodak Theater of Los Angeles the most important event in the industry of cinema: the Academy Awards Ceremony. Martin Scorsese was—at last!—rewarded for his most recent film, "The Departed", featuring Jack Nicholson and Leonardo DiCaprio, among others. He was given an Oscar® for being the Best Director and for having made the Best Movie. The statuette was given by a shock trio: Francis Ford Coppola, George Lucas and Steven Spielberg, maybe the world's best directors ever—and good friends of Scorsese's.

Apart from that, as expected, Forest Whitacker and Helen Mirren were elected Best Actors, and Al Gore (former US Vice-President) was awarded the Oscar for the Best Documentary. The Oscar was given to him by the famous stand-up comedian Jerry Seinfeld (whom I am a great fan of).
