De/La Brabançonne

The Brabançonne is Belgium's national anthem. It seems that hardly anyone knows the lyrics…

Today, we were talking about Het Willelmus, the national anthem of the Netherlands. Our Dutch Literature professor, Mrs. Leijnse, told us that every single Dutchman knew the 1st and 6th couplets of the anthem - those that are sung for football events, etc. Then, Mrs Leijnse asked who, among us all (that is to say about 40 students), could sing Belgium's national anthem. I was astonished to find out that I was the only one who could sing it!!! Unbelievable. Of course, I was forced to sing it — and I did at ludicrous speed, which made everybody laugh…

Given that nobody knows the lyrics, I'm going to put it on this blog, so that the entire world has access to it. (I know the Wikipedia entry exists, too.) I know the French version, but by the end of next week, I will be able to sing it in Dutch! (Let me more time for the German version…)
